The Social Sector: An Overview
What is Social Enterprise?
Social enterprise is a movement in business away from an emphasis on profit as the singular goal of business enterprise to a focus on the core values of profit, the planet, and people. Referred to as the triple bottom line or blended values, this new set of business values is an evolving framework,
with underlying principles that promote development of products and services in an ethical and environmentally-friendly manner, and consider the people involved in the process of creating and selling those products or services as a valued and integral part of the business.
Today the social sector is growing rapidly as public policy shifts to encourage entrepreneurs to develop innovative solutions to society’s complex problems. As a business structure, social enterprises lie in the center of a continuum between traditional stock corporations and tax exempt organizations. As a hybrid business structure, social enterprises generate profits while creating social impact with the inherent flexibility to create both social and economic value through multi-stakeholder solutions.
